In 1941, the first program-controlled computer for general-purpose use was built by Konrad Zuse and Helmut Schreyer. The "Z-3," as it was called, used electromechanical relays and was programmed using punched film. Its successor, the "Z-4," was smuggled dismantled out of Berlin when Zuse escaped the Nazis in March of 1945.
